First decent round of the year
and not coincidentally, on the first well-maintained golf course I've played on this year. The Duke Children's Classic is happening on the Duke course right now, and I hope the awful conditions there don't keep people from coming back. The range should be open to the participants (for the first time in forever), and the rest of us should get a chance to use it starting next week. That doesn't fix the poanna on the greens, the missing fringes, the bare spots on the throats of the fairways, the bunkers with a veneer of sand over clay, or various other deferred maintenance issues. Hopefully they've just put off maintenance until the hotel construction finishes, but if not I'm definitely playing somewhere else.
While I do like the way that Finley is being maintained, I also really miss the old layout (not the old maintenance). The old layout was like Duke in that each hole was generally isolated from the others. When they re-designed it a few years ago, they put it on a lot smaller acerage, and the cost is not much more than a line of trees between various fairways. That really took away some charm.
