First time camping with the family
On the way back from our visit to the lake in Michigan, we stopped at a campground in Ohio to spend the night. We picked a campground where we could have a wooded tent site, but also have power and water at the site, and have a bathroom with showers available. We got the tent set up reasonably quickly, and then worked on getting a fire started. The girls helped me find kindling, and picked sticks to use to roast hot dogs. It took me an embarrassing number of tries to get the fire started, but I did get it started in the end.
Everyone really enjoyed the hot dogs (everyone had seconds!), and then we cleaned up and went to sleep. We each took a turn telling a story before going to sleep, which was really cool. It took a while to fall asleep because we're all used to air conditioning and it was hot & muggy, but it wasn't too bad. Some time early in the morning (~3AM), it started to rain gently. Since our tent has a central part of the roof that is screened for good ventilation, this was my signal to get up and throw the rain canopy on over tent. Probably should have practiced that one once first... :-).
Everyone was happy in the morning; we had a quick cold breakfast before loading things back up in the van, showering, and hitting the road. Then we had a hot breakfast at Bob Evans, which was great.
Now that I think about this again, there was a Hudson Automobile convention going on in Chilicothe, which is where we stopped for the hot breakfast. The kids got to see lots of Hudson Hornets, which they recognized from the character Doc in Cars. That was pretty cool too.
