It's a new year

Well, it is the first day of a new year. I've spent most of the day on maintenance of the applications that run on wittle.net. I upgraded roller from 2.0 to 3.0, upgraded PHP from 4.X to 5.2, upgraded mediawiki from 1.2 to 1.8.2 and added an extension that allows restricted pages. I also installed Gallery 2.1.2 to replace the home-built photo album I'd been running. Quite a day.

I've also perused my weblog entries for the last year or so; it's surprising how much has changed. In the last year, I've taught myself perl (and written a couple of significant application prototypes for NetApp), and become much more intimately familiar with the Macintosh and OS X. I switched from my old G4 to a new MacBook Pro 17" machine so I can run both Windows and OS X; hopefully Parallels will get more stable over time...

I've depened my understanding of mediawiki and using it to build structured websites for delivering solid and current information.

Along the way I've lost sight of other non-work non-technology oriented goals; this needs to be a focus for the coming year. It will be interesting at this point next year to see what the focus of my posting has been. I have two gift certificates for C'est Bon cooking school that I got last year and haven't used; this will be one thing to follow up on this year that isn't done with a computer and isn't to benefit work. I also still find myself pining for a good piano-like keyboard that I can play with now and then when the urge hits. Now that I've documented these, I'll have to come back and follow up at some point in the future. I wonder when that will be?
